A Urea test measures the amount of urea nitrogen in your blood, which is a waste product formed when the body breaks down proteins. The kidneys filter urea out of the blood, so high levels may indicate kidney dysfunction, dehydration, high protein intake, or certain metabolic conditions. Low levels may be seen in liver disease or malnutrition. Doctors commonly recommend this test when symptoms like fatigue, swelling, decreased urine output, or nausea suggest possible kidney or metabolic issues.

For the Urea test, a small blood sample is taken from a vein, and fasting for 8–12 hours may be advised, depending on your doctor’s instructions. This test is often performed along with Creatinine and Electrolytes as part of a Kidney Function Test (KFT) to provide a complete assessment of kidney health and filtration efficiency.
