RBS (Random Blood Sugar)

A Random Blood Sugar (RBS) test measures the glucose level in your blood at any time of the day, without the need for fasting. It helps identify high or low blood sugar levels and is commonly used to screen for diabetes, especially when symptoms such as increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, or blurred vision are present. This test is quick and useful in emergency situations or routine health checkups.

For the RBS test, a small blood sample is taken from a vein or finger prick, and no preparation is needed. The results help determine whether further tests like FBS, PPBS, or HbA1c are required for accurate diagnosis and monitoring of blood sugar control.

FBS (Fasting Blood Sugar)

A Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) test measures blood glucose levels after an overnight fast of 8–12 hours. It is one of the most reliable tests for diagnosing diabetes and prediabetes. Elevated fasting sugar levels may indicate impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, or early diabetes, even before symptoms appear.

For the FBS test, only water is allowed during the fasting period, and a small blood sample is collected in the morning. This test helps assess baseline glucose levels and is often combined with PPBS or HbA1c for a complete evaluation of blood sugar status.

PPBS (Postprandial Blood Sugar)

A Postprandial Blood Sugar (PPBS) test measures the blood glucose level 2 hours after eating a meal. It helps doctors understand how your body processes glucose after food intake. High PPBS values may indicate diabetes, poor sugar control, or the need for changes in diet or medication.

For the PPBS test, you eat a normal meal, wait exactly two hours, and then provide a blood sample. No other preparation is required. PPBS is commonly used along with FBS to monitor diabetes and evaluate how well treatment plans are working.
