An RFT (Renal Function Test) is a group of blood tests that help assess how well your kidneys are working. It typically includes measurements of creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), uric acid, electrolytes, and sometimes eGFR. These values help detect kidney diseases, dehydration, metabolic disorders, and conditions affecting kidney filtration. Doctors recommend an RFT when symptoms like swelling, fatigue, decreased urine output, nausea, or high blood pressure suggest possible kidney issues.

For the RFT, a small blood sample is collected from a vein, and fasting for 8–12 hours may be recommended, depending on your doctor’s advice. This test helps monitor chronic kidney disease, evaluate the effects of medications on kidney health, and guide treatment plans. RFT is often done along with urine tests for a more complete kidney assessment.
