An Iron test measures the level of iron in your blood to evaluate how well your body stores and uses this essential mineral. Iron is important for producing hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. Low iron levels can lead to iron deficiency anemia, causing symptoms like fatigue, weakness, pale skin, and shortness of breath. High iron levels may indicate conditions such as hemochromatosis, liver disease, or excessive iron intake.

For the Iron test, a small blood sample is collected from a vein. Fasting for 8–12 hours is often recommended, as recent meals—especially those rich in iron—can affect the results. This test is commonly done along with Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC), Ferritin, and Transferrin Saturation tests to give a complete picture of iron status in the body.
