An HCV (Hepatitis C Virus) test is used to detect antibodies or genetic material of the virus responsible for Hepatitis C infection. Hepatitis C affects the liver and can cause both acute and chronic disease. Many people do not show early symptoms, but the virus can still damage the liver over time. Doctors recommend this test if you have symptoms like fatigue, jaundice, abdominal pain, dark urine, or if you have risk factors such as blood transfusions, needle exposure, or unsafe medical practices.
For the HCV test, a small blood sample is collected from a vein, and no fasting or special preparation is required. If the antibody test (Anti-HCV) is positive, a confirmatory PCR test is usually done to check for active infection. Early diagnosis helps prevent liver complications and allows timely treatment to reduce the risk of chronic liver disease.
