A Kidney Function Test (KFT) is a group of blood tests that assess how well your kidneys are functioning. It typically includes measurements of urea, creatinine, uric acid, and electrolytes such as sodium and potassium. These values help detect kidney diseases, dehydration, metabolic disorders, and conditions affecting the filtration efficiency of the kidneys. Doctors recommend a KFT when symptoms like swelling, fatigue, reduced urine output, nausea, or high blood pressure suggest possible kidney issues.

For the KFT, a small blood sample is collected from a vein. Fasting for 8–12 hours may be recommended, depending on your doctor’s instructions. This test helps diagnose early kidney problems, monitor chronic kidney disease, and evaluate how well treatments or medications are affecting kidney health. KFT is often performed along with urine tests for a complete kidney assessment.
