A Triglycerides (TG) test measures the amount of triglycerides— a type of fat—present in your blood. Triglycerides store unused calories and provide energy to the body. High triglyceride levels are often linked to heart disease, diabetes, obesity, thyroid problems, and metabolic syndrome. Doctors usually advise this test when there are risk factors such as high cholesterol, weight gain, unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, or a family history of heart-related conditions.
For the TG test, a small blood sample is taken from a vein. Fasting for 9–12 hours is usually recommended, as recent meals can affect triglyceride levels. This test is usually part of a lipid profile and helps evaluate your heart health, monitor treatment, and guide dietary or lifestyle changes.
